Christopher John Francis Boone is a 15 year old boy with autism. One night Christopher discovers Wellington, Mrs.Shear’s poodle, dead on her front lawn. He walks closer to the scene and figures out that Wellington had been stabbed with a pitch fork. Mortified, Christopher is determined to solve the case. One day after school Christopher went to Mrs.Shear’s house to investigate the crime scene and wandered into the backyard, looked inside the tool shed and found the pitch fork that was used to kill Wellington . He then concludes that whoever killed the dog had to know where the tools were kept.
Christopher’s autism causes many problems within his family. Christopher and his dad live together alone because his mother supposedly died from a heart condition, but he was never allowed to visit her in the hospital. His curiosity about the murder of Wellington led him to discover that his mother had an affair with Mr.Shears. Devastated with the news, Christopher goes home and writes in his book about the shocking news. Later his father comes home, finds his book and realizes Christopher knows about the affair. This leads to his father acting out his anger and is abusive towards Christopher. With the new news about his mom he goes and investigates a little more about his mom. Going through his fathers stuff he sees letters from his mom 18 months after her death. He takers the letters and figures out that his mother went to London with Mr. Shears. He confronts his father with the information and his father says that the letters are true. His father then shares his secret of him killing Wellington when he was angry. Christopher thinks that if he killed Wellington that he is capable of killing him.
Scared for his life Christopher makes a trip to London to see his mom. He gets on the train, goes to London and to the address that was on the letters from his mom. Once he arrives at his mother’s shop he recognizes her voice and is surprised to see him.
