The book Enrique’s Journey, written by Sonia Nazario is a story of true hardship as we follow the main character, Enrique, along with thousands of others who go on this grand odyssey to America. For some, the motivation is becoming prosperous, for others, it’s to find the ones that they have lost. Every year, hundreds of mothers and fathers leave their children in Mexico and take the grueling journey to America. These parents go to America to ideally make their child’s life a better life than their own life was. They send money, gifts, and toys back to Mexico from the U.S, something that they could have never done living in Mexico.
However, what these courageous parents don’t realize is that life goes on. They expect their children to go to school and prosper with the help of their allowances; however, this is often not the case. Children abandoned by their parents in Mexico often rebel and feel more alone than ever. They respect the fact that their parents work hard to send them money to go to school and have a roof over their heads, but money means nothing to a child compared to love. They lack and desperately want the love that they have lost; so many children drop out of school, leave the rest of their family in Mexico and go on the journey to find their mother or father in America. For many of these children, they will never see their parents again. Either they will die from the journey or never find their parents in the foreign United States.
The author Sonia Nazario shows us the tragedy and anticipation that these abandoned children go through. She uses the real story of a boy named Enrique to paint us a clear picture. His mother, Lourdes, left him more than half his lifetime ago and he is determined to find her. In the states, Lourdes found herself married to a new man and raising a new family. Will Enrique ever find his lost love? If so, will he feel betrayed by his mother’s new family?
