America’s First Civil war was fought over slavery. The second homeland conflict was fought over an even more controversial issue: reproductive rights. The war ended and the resolution was a new law, which states “Life is protected until the age of thirteen from the sacred moment of conception. Unfortunately, from thirteen to eighteen, a simple signature from a parent onto a piece of paper and that child is to be “unwound”, in which anything usable from their body including fluid or actual limbs and organs are transplanted onto another person who can afford them or simply needs them.
The novel follows a journey of two runaway “Unwinds”, Connor and Risa, and a tithe; Lev, who since birth was convinced that unwinding is God’s will. Together they travel across the country to escape capture and fight for their right to live. They constantly evade authorities and jump over constant hurdles, but they cant run forever. The must find a way to survive past or wait for the laws to change. Their very existence and those of their fellow “unwinds” will depend on the trio’s will to survive and desire to become a voice for themselves and those who are left with no choice.
Unwind is an example of when where things just go too far and where society distances itself from the principles of “The Pursuit of Life, Liberty and Happiness.” It is not just a story of survival as it describes a cruel fantasy of when things go too far. As the story progresses, the young trio of Connor, Lev, and Risa learn they are not alone and together, they realize the lack of pride in what it means to be alive. This is a great novel for teenagers as it looks at life from a whole new perspective and makes them realize how lucky they are to have people that fight for rights we all take for granted.
